Artwork Creation

In the process of artwork creation, Dmitriy Pavlov uses the technology of hand piercing and engraving, which he exclusively developed. The secret know-how consists of the unique techniques and tools, astonishing jewelry shapes and designs, highest quality of metals and gems, and Dmitriy's Master hands. All these give his artworks an incomparable look among the works of other goldsmiths and artists.

Hand Piercing and Engraving of a Ring

Metal Strip Drilling

Metal Strip Drilling
The first step of engraving is metal strip drilling. The metal strip, with pre-drawn design pattern, is pierced with the finest drills with diameter of 0.3-0.5mm. Often, the space between the scrolls is so small, that the hole actually touches the scrolls. This process outlines the design of the ring.

Metal Strip Piercing

Metal Strip Piercing
The finest saw blades 0.18-0.21mm are used for piercing. The process is commonly done under the microscope for insuring utmost precision. After piercing the metal strip, the inner side of each hole is polished and burnished with the dull back side of the saw blade.

Metal Strip Bending

Metal Strip Bending
The metal strip with pierced scrolls is bent in a desired ring shape. In order to preserve the fine and fragile scrolls from tearing apart, a lead block, mandrel, and a rawhide mallet are used for accurate shaping.

Ring Soldering

Ring Soldering
After bending and shaping, the ring is soldered. Only hard solders are used in this process for obtaining the maximal strength of the joint. Now the blank is ready for engraving.

Ring Engraving

Ring Engraving
A microscope and special profile gravers are used for engraving. Each scroll is engraved to its' greatest possible depth; some scrolls are 1.3mm deep! By the end of this process, the surface of the ring looks like a bended concave mirror.

Ring Polishing

Ring Polishing
Only a light polishing is required now in order to have the whole ring sparkle as one diamond cut gem, visually blurring the borders between the metal and the actual gem, and creating an effect of one large diamond. The polishing is done by the finest polishing compound which helps to boost the natural shine of the metal.

Minor Gems' Setting

Minor Gems' Setting
The minor gems 1-2.5mm are usually set in carved bezels, rather then soldered-in. This prevents creation of pronged bumps on the exterior and lateral parts of the ring, which makes the ring comfortable for every day wearing.

Prongs Head Soldering

Prongs Head Soldering
The prongs head is soldered on top of the ring. This is the only element that wasn't a part of the original metal strip. The purpose of the prongs head is to hold a big diamond, and make it look even bigger than it is.

Central Jewel Setting

Central Jewel Setting
Central jewel setting is usually the last step of the ring creation. After the final polish and finish, the ring is ready.
